Maputo, Mozambique, Embassy of Sweden
The Embassy of Sweden in Mozambique sits on one of Maputo's largest boulevards, Julius Nyerere, with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The same building also houses the Finnish Foreign Ministry.
Built in 1989–91, the Embassy building comprises chancery offices over three floors around a spacious atrium. Below is a basement floor that houses a garage, a former health clinic and the building's services. Wide steps lead up to a large portico that opens onto the atrium. Two walls clad in polished Labrador granite catch the eye of visitors and provide some degree of privacy. A sculpture by Hanns Karlewski in front of the Embassy symbolises two different but connected worlds that cannot exist without each other.
Agreement with the Finnish Foreign Ministry
In the early 1990s, an agreement was reached with the Finnish Foreign Ministry for offices on the ground floor to become the Embassy of Finland. Since 2005, the Finnish Embassy has occupied the top floor.
