Karlsborg Fortress

A community in miniature

On the shores of Lake Vättern lies Karlsborg Fortress, a memorial from the days of Sweden's central defence policy. This is where the royal family, the government, the gold reserves and the crown jewels were to be moved to in the event of war. The lengthy construction work started in 1819 and the fortress was already out of date when it was completed 90 years later.

This fortress is the largest in Europe. It is a fascinating place, and well worth a visit. Within the walls there is a community in miniature, including a hospital and a church in neo-Gothic style.
