Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm Castle enjoys a beautiful location on the shores of Lake
Mälaren close to the town of Mariefred, approximately 70 km from
Stockholm.

The castle is one of Sweden's Vasa castles, having been founded by Gustav Vasa in 1537. Today it contains a unique collection of furniture and works of art from the past four centuries.

Duke Karl's chamber from the sixteenth century and Gustav III's theatre from theeighteenth century are just some of the highlights. The exclusive court theatrewas created in one of the castle's round renaissance towers, and a visit thereis like taking a trip back in time.

GustavIII was keen on architecture and had many ideas for developing the castle. Oneidea that was put into practice was the Cavalier wing in the outer courtyard.This brick-built accommodation for court servants is considered to be the bestpreserved example of its kind from the eighteenth century.

The castle is now a museum,housing, among other things, the Swedish state's portrait collection, witharound 1400 portraits of famous Swedes. Every year the Gripsholm Associationselects a worthy Swedish citizen to be painted.

Thecastle park has winding paths, gardens and seats. The castle deer park is hometo around 100 descendants of the royal deer from the Royal Deer Park inStockholm.
