A one-time top secret fortress
Compared with many of Sweden's other defences, Boden Fortress is not especially old, having been built in 1908. This top secret fortress served as a northern defence during two World Wars and during the Cold War. The fortress consists of several smaller forts blasted into the rock. The only thing that can be seen against the hillside is hints of concrete and steel. Boden Fortress occupies an important role in the architecture and history of Swedish defence.
Today you can visit Rödberg Fort, one of the artillery forts forming part of the fortress, and go on a guided tour through parts of the fortress that were formerly so secret.
