Borgholm Castle ruins
Dating from the Middle Ages
The construction of this castle has a long history. Back in the twelfth century there was a defensive tower and a ring wall on this site. Parts of these structures were used when Johan III 1572-1592 had a renaissance castle built on the site. Unfortunately this magnificent building was destroyed just 20 years later when the Danes reached Öland during the Kalmar War. The castle fell into disrepair and in 1803 a garment factory and a dye works were established there. It burned down several years later and the castle became a ruin.
Today Borgholm Castle ruins are a popular destination for those interested in cultural history. There are concerts, exhibitions and much more besides.
