National Property Board Sweden´s (SFV) environmental work

Being a hero of sustainability today is about taking responsibility for tomorrow.

The task of the National Property Board Sweden (SFV) is to balance cultural and natural environments with social and economic considerations in order to contribute to a sustainable society. The environmental work at SFV is the result of teamwork carried out by our committed employees. Everyone who contributes to the work is an environmental hero. So there is not just one Captain Climate, AmOzone, Notoxika, Aquarius or Ecologist at SFV; there are four hundred. And they all have the same goal: to manage our shared cultural and natural heritage for a sustainable future.

Environmental work is rarely very dramatic. Usually it is a matter of mundane procedures: managing, planning, discussing, designing and budgeting. It can happen quickly or take several years. Sometimes it is visible, sometimes not, but the environment always notices the difference.The environmental work that SFV has undertaken over the past ten years has produced results:

• Our electricity contract guarantees that the electricity we use is green and produced from hydroelectric sources.
• To a large extent, our oil-fired boilers have been replaced, which has cut our oil consumption by 88%.
• Of the forests that we manage, we have voluntarily set aside 100,000 hectares for environmental protection.
• The amount of ozone-destructive refrigerants in our air conditioning systems is down 99.8%.
• We have assessed our properties for PCBs and carried out decontamination work where necessary. We have also measured radon levels and taken the necessary action in most of our properties.

SFV focusing on sustainability

One of the broadest initiatives currently underway is our drive to improve energy efficiency. We aim to reduce energy consumption by 26% by 2016, and to help generate electricity from the windpower on land that we own.
