Frövi Colonel's Residence
On historic land
Frövi lies in the parish of Skultuna in Västmanland, a few kilometres north of Västerås. The name Frövi suggests that it was a cult location in the Iron Age. Identified remains include a number of finds from the Stone Age and a flint from the Iron Age.
Use today
The manor's buildings are concentrated in the southern section of the estate, surrounded by old gardens and fields. Directly east of the manor house stand the farm buildings, the majority of which date from the first half of the twentieth century. The northern section of the estate is mostly forest - primarily pine forest of the same age. Today Frövi is a centre of agriculture, with a tenant farmer looking after the farm buildings, Captain's Residence and agricultural land. Frövi became a national monument in 1935.
History
Frövi is mentioned for the first time in 1342 as land exempt from tax. In 1406 Frövi was bought by Västerås cathedral and remained in the ownership of the church until the Reformation. Frövi was granted to privy councillor Senator Henrik Horn in 1613 and was then inherited by his son.
Supply system for top military figures
Karl XI introduced his indelningsverk as a way of ensuring the recruitment and maintenance of an army. As part of this, in 1683 Frövi was reclaimed by the crown in its process of land recovery. During the period of the indelningsverk the official residence functioned as a supply centre for top military figures. Frövi became the official residence of the colonel of the Västmanland regiment in 1691. Berga farm was also reclaimed by the crown and made a Captain's Residence, farmed from Frövi. In the eighteenth century Berga was split up into a number of crofter's holdings instead. A new Captain's Residence, Hagtorpsstugan, was built outside the village at a later stage.
