County Governor's Residence in Jönköping
Destroyed by fire in 1734
The location of the County Governor's Residence in Jönköping was once the site of Jönköping Castle. For a hundred years, until it was destroyed by fire in 1734, the castle housed the County Administrative Board, the County Governor's Residence and reception rooms.
The new residence
The new residence, which lies on the edge of Rådhusparken in Jönköping, was built in neo-Renaissance style in 1884-86 as designed by architect Johan Fredrik Åbom. It comprised a main building on three floors, with the entrance facing the park, and two shorter wings. The buildings housed the county governor's apartments as well as rooms for the County Administrative Board.
In the early twentieth century, the attic level was extended out towards the garden and in 1921-23 the west wing was extended. The building has a well preserved interior, retaining much of its original character. Nowadays, the County Governor's Residence functions both as a reception space and home for the county governor and his or her family.
Layout
The ground floor comprises the entrance hall, with rooms off, and the gallery. One floor up is the actual reception area, with salons, a dining room and kitchen, offices and reception rooms and the private drawing room. The top floor has guest rooms and a royal suite.
Although one of the youngest of the country's current county governors' residences, the building is a national monument.
