Palaces and fortifications
Defending the fortresses
The forts and fortifications once built to defend Sweden are no longer needed for that purpose. Now it is our turn to defend them and give them a more peaceful task. Today their enemies are heat, cold, moisture, air, pollution and vegetation.
National Property Board Sweden (SFV) takes care of Sweden's old defensive works and makes them accessible to the general public. These include Varberg Fortress, Oskar II's fort and Vaxholm citadel.
SFV also manages many other monuments and relics of national interest, such as the Vasa Monuments, Borgholms Castle ruins and the Roma monastery ruins.

Bohus fortress at Kungälv was built in the early 14th century when Bohuslän county was still part of Norway. It has been a ruin since the end of the 18th century.
